Spirulina

Spirulina is a cultivated micro-algae which has been consumed for thousands of years by the indigenous peoples in Mexico and Africa. It is one of the highest known protein sources on Earth and contains 70% complete protein.

It comes in both powder and tablet form and is great to add to green smoothies.

It is high in many vitamins and minerals, including:

  • Vitamins C, D, and E and contains more beta-carotene than carrots.

  • It is also high in B vitamins, which helps support energy levels and mood.

  • Good source of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.

Studies have shown that spirulina can help control blood sugar levels and cravings thus making it a key food for diabetics, and can be used to assist in weight loss and as a general nutritional supplement. It has also been shown to balance blood pressure, normalize cholesterol, and encourage and support the growth of healthy bacterial flora in your gut,5 which can help keep candida overgrowth under control. The chlorophyll content, which gives spirulina its rich green colour, protects the liver from toxins and cleanses the body, blood and kidney’s. It is rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory effects.

There are many types of spirulina out there so it is important to do your homework before making a purchase. Since spirulina grown in an uncontrolled environment has the potential to become contaminated with heavy metals and other toxins, it is important to choose organic spirulina from a reputable source.

Do no consume spirulina if you are pregnant or have hyperthyroidism, or if you have allergies to seafood or iodine. Consult your healthcare provider before taking spirulina.
