Coconut Water
Naturally refreshing, coconut water has a sweet, nutty taste. Not to be confused with high-fat coconut milk or oil, coconut water is a clear liquid in the fruit’s center that is tapped from young, green coconuts.
High in potassium, fat free, cholesterol free, low in acidity with no sugar, coconut water contains the five essential electrolytes—potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium, and phosphorous—that help hydrate and replenish the body. Coconut water has 15 times more potassium than that found in commercial sport drinks so it is an ideal beverage for mid and post exercise, as well as any other time of day
Healthy facts about coconut water:
• Facilitates digestion and is a natural diuretic • Fat free • Low in carbohydrates • Low in natural occurring sugar • Keeps the body cool and at the proper temperature • Helps in the treatment of kidney and urethral stones • Helps infants suffering from intestinal disturbances • Helps lowers arterial pressure • Helps relieve spasms and stomach pain • Naturally hydrates the body • Helps maintains the human body’s natural fluid levels • Helps carry nutrients and oxygen to cells • Eliminate swelling in hands and feet • Normalizes the intestinal function and raises metabolism • Heals damage induced by antibiotics and toxins in the digestive tract • Boosts poor circulation
Young coconuts are readily available these days. When searching for the perfect fresh coconut to enjoy, be sure to steer clear of those that have a hard brown shell as this is an indication that it is mature. Instead, look for those that are young and green on the exterior as they usually contain a large supply of the actual coconut water substance. Most commercial grocery stores will carry young coconuts with the green skin removed (see picture below).
Once you extract the water from the young coconut, don't forget about the white meat. You can add it to smoothies, soups, or even healthy baked goods for a great taste with an overload of nutrients.
Be Nutritious and enjoy!
